Updated: 2012-10-04 11:01:52
Jewish Hoops America has selected Eric Avdee, a senior guard from Tarbut vTorah High School in Irvine, CA, as the 2010 National Player of the Year.

The Coach of the Year is Tarbut's Patrick Roberts, who was also named top coach in Division 6AA of the California Interscholastic Federation's Southern Section. The Underclassman of the Year, selected from top freshmen and sophomores, was YULA sophomore Jack Gindi.

Avdee led the Lions (24-5) to the #1 ranking in the final Jewish Hoops America poll after the team reached the sectional final for the second straight year and became the first Jewish high school to reach the California regional playoffs.

The Coach of the Year is Tarbut's Patrick Roberts, who was also named top coach in Division 6AA of the California Interscholastic Federation's Southern Section. The Underclassman of the Year, selected from top freshmen and sophomores, was YULA sophomore Jack Gindi.

Jewish Hoops America has honored top players and coaches for the past four years. The voting was done by 13 coaches randomly selected from around the country and a representative of Jewish Hoops America. Forty-seven players were nominated by their coaches or Athletic Directors and received five points for every 1st team vote, four points for each 2nd team vote, two points for each 3rd Team vote and one point for Honorable Mention.

Avdee was hampered by a leg injury for most of his junior season and is JHA's first Player of the Year who was not previously an All-Jewish Hoops American since the award's inaugural season. He was a unanimous choice of the voters, getting selected 1st Team by all 14 voters and finishing with 70 points. He averaged 20.8 points and 7 rebounds per game and was named 1st Team All-CIF Southern Section.

Also named to the 1st Team were seniors Benjy Ritholtz (Hebrew Academy Nassau County(HANC)/Uniondale,NY), Zack Finder (YULA/Los Angeles,CA) and Omer Atishkin (American Hebrew Academy/Greensboro,NC) and junior Yisrael Feld (Marsha Stern Talmudical Academy(MTA)/New York,NY). Last year, Ritholtz was a 1st Team selection, Feld was on the 2nd Team and Finder was voted to the 3rd Team.

The 2nd Team includes senior Mike Gindea (Hebrew Academy Five Towns and Rockaway(HAFTR)/Cedarhurst,NY), senior teammates Mike Berg and Max Feldstein (Ramaz/New York,NY) and juniors Elan Kogutt (Yavneh Academy/Dallas,TX) and Jacob Susskind (Solomon Schechter of Essex and Union/West Orange,NJ).

The 3rd Team is seniors Jason Langer (Frisch/Paramus,NJ), Bradley Neutel (Tarbut vTorah/Irvine,CA) and Jonah Weisel (Jewish Day School/Rockville,MD), junior Ariel Gottlieb (Jewish High School of the Bay/San Francisco,CA) and sophomore Jack Gindi (YULA/Los Angeles,CA).

Honorable Mentions are seniors Zach Bruss (Tarbut vTorah/Irvine,CA), Amit Borsuk (American Hebrew Academy/Greensboro,NC), Yoni Kestenbaum (HAFTR/Cedarhurst,NY), Daniel Kirshblum (HANC/Uniondale,NY) and Benny Silver (Valley Torah/Valley Village,CA); juniors Zach Bloomberg (Ida Crown Jewish Academy/Chicago,IL) and Harry Vilensky (Derech HaTorah/Brooklyn,NY); sophomores Jeremy Gutovitz (Hyman Brand HA/Overland Park,KS) and Jacob Katz (San Diego Jewish Academy/San Diego,CA); and freshman Joseph Fallas (Shalhevet/Los Angeles,CA)

Patrick Roberts is a veteran California coach who has spent the past 12 years at Tarbut vTorah, compiling a 236-64 record while leading the Lions to the Southern Section Division 6AA title game the past two seasons. They lost the game each year but this year were allowed to play on with an at-large invitation to the Regional tournament.

The runner-up in Coach of the Year voting was Matthew Feldman of the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Rockville, MD, who guided his team to a 17-2 record and the #2 national ranking following the graduation of 2009 JHA Player of the Year Eitan Chemerinski. Second runner-up was Joey Hoenig of HAFTR, whose team finished 31-2, spent most of the year atop the national rankings and had a 30-game win streak that included the championship of the Sarachek Tournament at Yeshiva University. The other coaches on the ballot were: Randy Dulny, Ramaz; Dave Winik, YULA; Ronnie Winbush, Shalhevet; and Chris Moltmann, Hillel-Miami.

Although only a sophomore, Jack Gindi led YULA in scoring and rebounding and was named 2nd Team All-CIF Southern Section in Division 5AA. The runner-up for Underclassman of the Year was sophomore Jeremy Gutovitz of Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy-Kansas. Others considered for that award were sophomores Jacob Katz of San Diego Jewish Academy and Jordan Prescott of Yavneh Academy-Dallas and freshman Joseph Fallas of Shalhevet.
