JV: Dateline: Paramus, December 23, 2009:
When the JV Cougars played in Deal as the makeup of a snowed out game last Thursday night, the Heat opened a 13 point first quarter lead, and basically held that lead until 4:23 left in the 4th quarter, when the Cougars turned on their own heat, and went on a 23-2 run, to win the game 57-52.
Hillel must have come up the Garden State Parkway with dreams of upsetting the Cougars in their own lair.
At home Wednesday night, Frisch did not want to repeat that spectacle. With Zach Mayerhoff getting the start at the point, Freshman Yehudah Cohen getting his first career high school start at the small forward position, and the Cougars opening in a zone defense instead of a man to man, as played the last time, the plans of the Heat were cooled off.
Meyerhoff's solid leadership at the helm, excellent floor play by Cohen and the power rebounding of C David Borghard, allowed the Cougars to take a 6-2 lead after 4 minutes. PG Jordan Hod came in to direct the team thereafter, and the Cougars grew the lead to 16-2 at the end of the first quarter.
By the time the second quarter was over, the Cougars were able to go deep into the bench and hold a 22-12 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, the Cougars held the Heat to 6 points while scoring 12, and rebuilt the lead to 34-18. The final was 45-27 Frisch, quite the contrast from the 57-52 final just 10 days prior.
The scoring leader for Frisch Wednesday night was Mike Bouaziz with 15. All 16 eligible Frisch players got in, and 9 scored. Borghard finished with 8 pts and 16 rebounds, Cohen had 7 pts (7 rebs, 6 assts), and Hod, Mayerhoff and Fr. Seth Schlussel controlled the game at the point for the Cougars.
Varsity: Dateline: Paramus, December 23, 2009:
10 days ago, on a cold Monday night, the tenacious Hillel Heat took the Varsity Cougars to the brink, until the Cougars were able to pull to a 67-63 overtime win.
Coming to Frisch on Wednesday night, after a close loss at JEC last week, the Heat needed to beat the Cougars to keep up in the playoff hunt. They well remembered their near miss with Frisch and intended to better that outcome in Paramus.
The Cougars remembered it too, but they seem to be in a habit of tantalizing the opposition before getting serious at the end of the game. Not a good way for the medical condition of the coaches and the fans, not good basketball, but it sure keeps things exciting.
The Cougars won the tap and scored on a beautifully executed tap from Sr Captain SF Jason Langer to Sr Captain PF Judah Schulman who snapped a pass to to Jr PG Eytan Potash breaking to the basket and scoring on a driving layup.
But, after that piece of showmanship, the same pattern emerged as the Hillel took an early 11-9 lead in the first quarter, with Sr Captain C Alex Lubat keeping the Cougars in the game with 5 points. The heat outscored the Cougars again in the second quarter, 11-10 to take a 22-19 lead into the half. For Hillel in the 2nd quarter, Zagha had two beautiful pull up jumpers, including a three with Langer draped all over him, but Langer's offense helped keep the Cougars in the game with 6 pts.
Out of the locker room this time, the Cougars showed their own second half grit. They outscored the Heat 13-9, and grabbed the lead 32-31 to open the 4th quarter. Langer led the way again, this time with 7 points and stifling defense, as Lubat controlled the glass for the Cougars.
The Heat put on a furious run in the 4th quarter scoring 15 points, but the Cougars were up to the task with 19 points of their own, with Sr SG Yaakov Douck's 8 pts leading the way on offense and a home win for the Cougars, 51-46.
With the 51-46 final, and with JEC losing to Ramaz by 4 this week, only the Cougars and Ramaz have 1 defeat each in the West Division. JEC now has 2 losses (both close, both to Ramaz), and Hillel now has 4 losses; the West Division is up for grabs.
Langer led the Frisch offense with 17 pts, most of them coming when the Cougars needed a lift. Lubat had another double double with 11 points and 14 rebounds, as he snared every clutch rebound in sight. Douck added 11pts. Schulman had 5 pts but he too battled the determined Heat all night long.
The Heat shot 10-12 from the foul line, which kept them in the game. Frisch shot 14-21 from the line for a respectable 66.7% shooting percentage.
Zagha finished with 14 for Hillel, Sasson had 12 and Krost added 10.
MTA JV defeated Westchester JV 62 - 17.
