The 30th annual Israel Becker Tournament tipped off Thursday morning at Tanenbaum CHAT in Toronto.
Opening ceremonies and the bulk of the games start on Sunday but some of the preliminary games will be played Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. The tournament honors Israel Becker, a 1988 graduate of CHAT who passed away in 1994.
The boys’ bracket features the host CHAT Tigers, Beth Tfiloh from Baltimore, Hyman Brand H.A. from Kansas, Bialik from Montreal and three Israeli teams, Ironi Eilat, Leo Baeck and Elitzur Petach Tikvah.
CHAT, Beth Tfiloh, Bialik Hyman Brand, Leo Baeck and Jewish Day School from Maryland make up the girls’ field.
Teams will play each other in round robin preliminary games to establish seeding, with the top four in each tournament qualifying for the semifinals that begin Tuesday afternoon.
